Juan Gris, Violins and Guitar, 1913
Firstly, Gris is a master of design. He constructs his compositions almost architecturally so that each piece supports and strengthens the whole.
Secondly he is a wonderful colourist - better IMO than Picasso (at this stage anyway). Here he combines and contrasts muted toes with glowing jewel-like hues.
